REPERTOIRE
Songs for the Spring 2014 Season will be selected from the following repertoire:
That’s When the Music Takes Me, words and music by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, arranged by Mac Huff. This season’s super charged opener is a choral arrangement of the 1975 pop hit by Neil Sedaka.
Pieta, words and music by Joseph M. Martin. This moving original work draws its inspiration from Michelangelo's famous sculpture that shows Mary holding the slain Jesus in her arms. From this image, the composer recalls three vignettes from Mary's life and renders musical images of her holding the infant Christ, the living Christ, and the crucified Christ. The musical result is every bit as striking as its inspired masterpiece.
Takadamu (Lead the Way), words by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse, with traditional Swahili music. This pulsating and rhythmic African choral work combines five Swahili phrases followed by their English equivalents to express the importance of traveling life's road "step by step." The rhythms are infectious and the harmonies are traditional.
The Beatles in Revue, words and music by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, arranged by Ed Lojeski. It's been fifty years since The Beatles made their record-breaking first live television appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in New York City on February 9, 1964, and this musical tribute captures the memories and hopes of the Fab Four's generation while still resonating with audiences today. This medley includes: She Loves You; All My Loving; I Want to Hold Your Hand and Hey Jude.
The Arrow and the Song, words by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, arranged by Doug Wagner (from the Traditional English Folk Tune, "O Waly, Waly"). This inspired piece pairs the treasured Longfellow poem with a familiar and hauntingly beautiful melody to produce a resounding choral offering that is artistic in both text and musical expression.
Shenandoah/He's Gone Away, traditional American Folk Songs arranged by Mark Hayes. These reflective, poignant essays on the sting of separation, based on two simple folk songs, are very expressive, with warm harmonies and emotive vocal lines brought together with artistry and grace.
Secondhand White Baby Grand (from "Smash"), words by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, music by Marc Shaiman, arranged by Andy Beck. This standout ballad from the NBC television series, "Smash," warms the heart with genuine emotion and lyrical musicality. A poignant and metaphorical tale about second chances, the lyrics were inspired by a story in the life of 1950's motion picture icon Marilyn Monroe.
The Sound of Music (SATB Choral Selection), words by Oscar Hammerstein II, music by Richard Rodgers, arranged by Clay Warnick and John Cacavas. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the original Broadway musical production of "The Sound of Music" starring Mary Martin, and almost fifty years since the release of the 20th Century Fox motion picture starring Julie Andrews, based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp of the Trapp Family Singers. This choral medley includes five numbers from the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: Do Re Mi; The Sound Of Music; Edelweiss; My Favorite Things and Climb Ev'ry Mountain.
The Star-Spangled Banner, words by Francis Scott Key (from his 1814 poem, "Defence of Fort McHenry"), music by John Stafford Smith (from his 1765 tune, "The Anacreontic Song"), arranged by Victor A. Wong. The National Anthem of the United States turns 200 this year! In commemoration of this auspicious bicentennial, Spiritful Voices presents an exclusive a cappella arrangement of this historic work.
Battle Hymn of the Republic, words by Julia Ward Howe, music based on traditional 19th Century American folk song, arranged by Mark Hayes. Widely-celebrated performer, composer and arranger Mark Hayes has transformed this familiar American hymn into a spine-tingling gospel classic! This outstanding patriotic piece is now punctuated by soulful syncopations, choral call-and-response, and an instrumental ensemble that brings the work to expressive heights!
